What Is The Real Impact Of Uber On Drunk Driving?

Drunk drivers injure and kill so many people every year. We are constantly looking for answers as to how to make drunk driving a thing of the past.

One new wrinkle in the equation of how to bring down the number of accidents drunk drivers cause is ridesharing services like Uber. Since Uber was introduced in the New York City area there have been a number of studies that show that there are fewer drunk driving accidents.

After Many Attempted Solutions, Drunk Driving Persists

Drunk driving is a serious problem with a limited range of solutions. Many steps have been taken to try and eliminate drunk drivers from our roads. for example:

  • The consequences of a DUI conviction have become more severe over the last several decades.
  • Enforcement of drunk driving laws has increased.
  • The social stigma against drunk driving has increased.

Can Uber Really Help Minimize Drunk Driving?

While there have been many studies that show a link between the introduction of Uber and a decrease in drunk driving accidents, the reality is probably much more complicated. Uber has been the source for some of these studies, but, there have also been some independent studies that could support the claim.

But, as with all things, the devil is in the details and trying to compare drunk driving arrests and accidents over a period of time from one metro area to another is complicated. There may be many factors that could impact the incidence of drunk driving arrests and accidents. Perhaps a particular study did not control for them.

No matter what the real impact of Uber on Drunk Driving in the New York City area is, it is probably best for people to not look to Uber as a panacea and to still remain vigilant about preventing drunk driving by not getting behind the wheel while drunk and by acting as designated drivers for friends.
