Alert drivers best equipped to avoid car accidents in the city

Members of the public who choose to drive in New York City take on a special kind of risk that is no secret to anyone. Drivers must be alert and constantly ready to maneuver in city traffic. Many car accidents occur to those not acclimated to the fast pace of driving generally encountered on the city's streets.

City employees and law enforcement officers are not exempt from the dangers of driving in New York City. In a recent incident, a New York City Police Department officer was hit and injured seriously while driving a department scooter to the Columbus Day Parade in the Bronx. The officer was on-duty and scheduled to work the parade.

The accident occurred when another driver struck the scooter's rear tire as the officer was attempting a left-hand turn, according to a witness. The impact caused the officer to lose control of his vehicle, which led to his colliding with the front driver's side of a pickup truck. At the point of impact, the cop went flying through the air and landed on top of another vehicle, according to the pickup truck driver.

The officer had a severely broken ankle with multiple fractures. He was in intense pain and losing blood rapidly. He got disoriented and was in terrible pain, per the witnesses. The driver of the Mercedes car that made the initial impact with the scooter was not arrested.

It appears that that driver was, however, at fault civilly for causing the accident. She was coming in the other direction on the highway and had a duty to allow the scooter to complete its turn prior to going forward. By not relinquishing the roadway and not proceeding with utmost caution, she was likely careless and the apparent cause of the officer's serious injuries. Compensation must be paid by negligent drivers in New York City car accidents where the negligence is the substantial cause of the victim's injury. Moreover, the police officer is likely entitled to collect workers' compensation benefits as well.
