Slip-and-fall accidents: Court upheld verdict for victim of fall

Every day, many New York residents and others around the nation enter stores of all sizes to make routine purchases. Whether buying food, toiletries or other household items, these shopping trips are usually completed without incident. Unfortunately, a visit to a store several years ago resulted in a slip-and-fall accident for a woman in another state. Despite a lengthy legal process, a decision was recently made that upheld a verdict made in favor for the victim of the fall.

In July 2012, a 60-year-old woman fell after slipping on clear laundry detergent in the aisle of a Dollar General store. The woman was required to undergo several surgeries after suffering fractures to her legs and shoulders. She subsequently filed a lawsuit against the store's parent company. Her medical expenses reached almost $500,000, according to her attorneys. The lawsuit claimed that the corporation's safety procedures were lacking, which led to her accident.

Those involved in the lawsuit were required to participate in a mediation process in March 2014. A circuit court judge then told the parties to try mediation again in April 2015. A jury award the victim over $1.7 million in Sept. 2016. This verdict was recently upheld by the Alabama Supreme Court.

Slip-and-fall accidents can lead to serious injuries that require extensive medical expenses, hospital bills and rehabilitation costs. When a business has been negligent in providing a safe environment for its customers, an accident victim may wish to file a lawsuit against the establishment. A New York personal injury attorney can assist victims and their families with the legal process. An experienced lawyer will work with clients to achieve a favorable outcome in the proceedings.
