Construction workers' accidents: Man dead after fall on site

The construction industry in New York is a multi-billion dollar business, with new facilities of every size being built. Workers on construction sites must routinely work in hazardous conditions, such as extreme weather or high altitudes. While companies certainly have extensive safety measures in place, construction workers' accidents still occur. A worker at a Manhattan job site recently died after falling in an elevator shaft.

According to reports, a 33-year-old man was working in Gramercy Park at a construction site for a new hotel. The man was helping install an elevator car and was on the ninth story when he fell almost 100 feet. Officials said that the man, who died at the scene, was not attached to a safety line when he fell.

While the site was non-union, workers from the Elevator Constructors local organization came to the scene when they learned of the accident. Information regarding the incident has not been released. Work on the job site has been halted by the Department of Buildings. Evidently, there have been multiple complaints about the site during the past year. The previous complaints involved loose debris at the site and workers' failure to wear proper equipment.

Construction workers' accidents still happen in New York, despite efforts by businesses to prevent them. When fatalities occur on the job site, family members of victims may wish to contact an attorney experienced in workers' compensation law. A trusted lawyer will help families seek the benefits to which they are entitled. In addition, legal assistance can prove beneficial should a family need to pursue litigation against a company that may have failed to provide a safe working environment.
