Criminal charges expected following fatal New York car accident

In New York, there are a variety of different transportation options. While most are typically relatively safe, such as using a livery driver, there are negligent people who can put the lives of many at risk by making poor choices. In fact, a man is now accused of drunk driving after he allegedly caused a car accident that resulted in a fatality.

The incident happened on a day in July. According to reports, a 50-year-old man was driving the wrong way in the westbound lanes of the Belt Parkway. Unfortunately, his vehicle reportedly struck a livery cab. The backseat passenger in the cab, a 27-year-old man, died as a result of injuries suffered in the collision.

Both of the drivers said to have been involved in the accident as well as a front seat passenger in the livery cab were transported to the hospital and are listed in stable condition. Police believe the driver allegedly driving the wrong way was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. He faces multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter and DUI.

While a car accident can happen any time in New York and across the country, there are certain precautions that drivers can take to help avoid them, including declining to drive after consuming alcohol. Unfortunately, a family is now left to cope with the unexpected loss of their family member. Though the alleged wrong-way driver faces criminal charges, surviving family members have the option of seeking justice through the civil court. If negligence can be proved, they could receive a financial award.
