High stakes at high-speed chases

Witnessing someone resisting arrest can be a terrifying experience. The perpetrator’s actions to elude the police can put several innocent bystanders at risk.

It becomes even more dangerous when that same person obtains a motor vehicle and forces the police to engage in a high-speed chase. The amount of property damage and pedestrians this criminal can cause significantly increases. An example of consequences that stem from these pursuits can be seen in a recent crash report.

The chase and crash

On a Sunday evening in early July, Lloyd police received a call regarding an erratic 29 year-old male driver. When they attempt to pull the man over, he tried to escape arrest by crossing west onto State Route 299 at high speeds.

The New York State Police began to pursue the driver and eventually witness the driver violently crashes his Porsche head on into a Ford pickup. The accident completely totaled both vehicles, sent chunks of metal debris everywhere and caused another car to run into the Porsche from behind.

The 39-year old pickup driver died from the impact and her 24-year old passenger suffers minor injuries. The Porsche driver is in critical but stable condition as his criminal charges are pending.

What can be done?

A car accident where the victim was nothing more than an innocent bystander is tragic. This woman’s family is suffering because she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. If the crash didn’t stop this man, more people could have been at risk.

If you notice any drivers going at abnormally high speeds or hear a siren, do what you would normally do if a police car or ambulance was in your lane and try to pull over to the side for safety. While this will not guarantee whether the high-speed escapee hits you or not, it is important to have some plan should you ever be in that scenario.

Family members who lose a love one due to another driver’s negligence should consider filing a wrongful death lawsuit and contact an experienced attorney to help with the process.
